Bare Funerals & Cremations

  • Online provider serving all of Sydney
  • 4.9/5 - 410 Reviews

Bare Funerals & Cremations is an Australian-owned funeral provider started by friends Sam McConkey and Cale Donovan after losses of their own. It describes itself as 100% Aussie-owned and not part of any larger funeral company. Bare works mainly by phone and online rather than from a local funeral parlour, so arrangements can be made from home, and services are held at partner venues or at a venue the family chooses.

Its range covers direct cremation with no ceremony, memorials held after a cremation, funerals with the coffin present, simple burials, graveside services and prepaid cremations. The business also offers online wills, fixed-fee grants of probate through its in-house lawyers, and complimentary grief counselling. In metropolitan Sydney, transfers, holding and cremation are handled by its partner Personal Services Australia at Macarthur Grange Crematorium in Smeaton Grange.

Bare takes calls 24/7 on 1800 071 176 and serves all of NSW, with prices set by zone. When we checked on 28 October 2026, its Sydney metro prices included Cremation Only at $2,999, which covers a simple coffin and the cremation fee, a Memorial from $5,399, a Funeral from $6,599 and a Burial Only from $3,399. For burials, the plot and the opening and closing fees are charged on top.

Director Janine Marra is a qualified mortician with more than 25 years in the industry, according to the firm's About page. She reads, writes and speaks Italian and has close ties to Sydney's Italian community. The firm's pricing sheet also lists mortuary and chapel facilities at Riverwood and Blacktown.

The team arranges traditional funerals, cremations, memorial services, direct burials and direct cremations, embalming and prepaid funerals. It also handles newspaper notices, memorial booklets, wakes, flag arrangements, horse and cart or limousine transport, and repatriation overseas, and can help families buy graves, crypts and tombs. Each grieving family is offered a blood orange tree as a living memorial.

Lady Anne Funerals

Lady Anne Funerals is an independent, Australian-owned funeral home that Karen Laing opened in 2006, after noticing how male-dominated the industry was. It is run by an all-female team, and in late 2025 it moved to new premises at 3/47 Buffalo Road, Gladesville. The firm says each person in its care stays at its privately owned mortuary and is cremated at a nearby crematorium.

Continuity is central to how Lady Anne works: the person who first meets a family stays with them through to the service. Its lady funeral directors arrange burials, cremations, memorial services, non-religious ceremonies, repatriation and prepaid funerals. The religious services page covers Roman Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Hindu, Buddhist, Jehovah's Witness, Latter-Day Saints, Masonic Lodge and RSL funerals, and the team can help Hindu families who need to hold a funeral within 24 hours.

The phone line, 1300 74 00 74, is answered 24/7, and the team can come to families anywhere in Greater Sydney, including Ryde, Eastwood, Epping, Strathfield, Burwood, Parramatta and Blacktown. When we checked on 28 October 2026, its cremation packages started from $3,965, with three levels on offer: No Service, No Attendance, a Single Cremation Service and a Bespoke Farewell. An instant online quote tool covers other options.

Acropolis Funeral Services

Acropolis Funeral Services is an independent, family-owned funeral home founded by Michael and Vicky Kiriazis, who still lead the business with their two children. Its head office is at 253-255 Homer Street, Earlwood, with appointment-only offices at Kingsford and Kogarah, and the firm says it has served Sydney families for more than 25 years.

Acropolis keeps mortuary care in-house. Its private refrigerated mortuary can hold up to 36 people, and preparation and embalming are done by its own qualified embalmer rather than an outside provider. Services include burial, cremation, graveside and above-ground burials, memorials, repatriation and prepaid funerals. Cultural pages cover Greek Orthodox, Catholic, Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, Hindu, Buddhist, Macedonian, Serbian, Pacific Islander and non-religious funerals. It also offers a Lady in White service, in which female funeral directors dressed in white conduct and accompany the funeral.

The Earlwood line, (02) 9558 1770, is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the suburbs it lists run from Marrickville and Bankstown to Randwick, Maroubra and Bondi. When we checked on 28 October 2026, its Direct Cremation package was published at $2,700 including GST. Cremation and burial services with a ceremony are quoted on enquiry, with cemetery and crematorium fees set out in the quote.

Timeless Funerals Sydney

Timeless Funerals is a 100% Australian family-owned business established in 2017 by Craig Stevens, a funeral professional with more than 30 years in the industry. Its Sydney office is in Avaya House on Epping Road, Macquarie Park, but the firm does not run walk-in offices. Instead, its staff meet families in their own homes by appointment, and it also covers the Central Coast and Newcastle.

The business describes its approach as contemporary services with traditional values, and it is built around fixed-price packages. Options run from direct cremation with no service or attendance to chapel and church services followed by cremation, graveside burials and church-to-burial funerals. Coffins, urns, prepaid funerals and pre-planning are also offered, and some packages include the firm's on-staff celebrant.

Timeless takes calls 24/7 on 1800 971 001 and arranges direct cremations across Greater Sydney, including Parramatta, Liverpool, Penrith, Hornsby, the Northern Beaches and the Eastern Suburbs. When we checked on 28 October 2026, its cremation page listed a Grace Package 1 no service, no attendance cremation at $2,295 and an Essential Direct Cremation at $2,595, which covers an eco coffin, the cremation fee at a private Sydney crematorium and the NSW cremation levy. Weekend and public holiday transfers, dressing and attendance at the cremation cost extra, and cremation packages with a service started at $5,995.

Divine Family Funerals

Divine Family Funerals is a Sydney funeral home at 206 William Street, Earlwood, run by directors Jim Georges, Nick Dimitriadis and Marina Dimitriadis. The chapel is set up for funerals, memorials and quiet reflection, and has accessible entry for guests with mobility needs.

Faith and culture shape much of its work. The site has dedicated pages for Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Serbian Orthodox, Catholic, Chinese and Hindu funerals, and the firm says it caters for all faiths and denominations. Services include burials with graveside ceremonies, cremation with or without a service, memorial services, non-traditional and eco-friendly celebrations of life, international repatriation and pre-planning. The team also arranges flowers and coffins, and offers aftercare and grief support in the days after the funeral.

Sydney Funerals Co.

Sydney Funerals Co. is an independent funeral director owned by Scott Duncombe and Angus Bettini. Scott, a funeral director and celebrant, has worked in funerals since 2012, and Angus is a funeral director who also runs operations. The business has two offices: 108 Stanley Street, Darlinghurst, for family meetings, and Inglewood Place, Baulkham Hills, which houses its own registered mortuary and is used for meetings and viewings.

The firm describes itself as celebrant-led, and several of its funeral directors are also celebrants. Families keep one contact from first call to funeral, and meetings can be held at home or at either office. It arranges cremations, burials, memorials, repatriation, prepaid plans and live streaming, and will hold a funeral at a winery, park or golf club. It says it adds no mark-up to coffins, mortuary or cemetery costs, charging a fixed service fee instead.

When we checked on 28 October 2026, its pricing estimator listed Direct Cremation Only at $2,495 including GST, covering a weekday transfer, cremation coffin, permits and the cremation fee. Beautiful Farewells is an independent Sydney funeral director, trading through Elite Funeral Directors Pty Ltd, with its funeral home at 98-100 Concord Road, North Strathfield. The business says it has 25 years in funeral service and has conducted more than 6,000 funerals. It keeps a small team, does not use a call centre and promises families continuity of care and direct access to their funeral director.

Services are built around named options: the No Attendance Cremation, the Simple Sendoff, the Beautiful Brunch and the fuller Beautiful Farewell ceremony, along with burials, cremations, repatriation and prepaid funerals. Venues can include the firm's own premises as well as harbour cruises, wineries and sailing clubs. The site also runs an online store of cremation urns, keepsake urns and keepsake jewellery, and lists upcoming services with families' permission.

Paul Lahood Funeral Services

Paul Lahood Funeral Services is an independent, Australian-owned funeral home at 71 Hume Highway, Greenacre, with a second address at 10 Jane Street, Blacktown. It is owned and run by Paul Lahood and his family. Paul began in the industry as a driver at 17, later worked as an arranger and conductor at another Sydney funeral business, and set up his own firm because he saw fewer family-run funeral homes as the industry became more corporate.

Families deal directly with the director, and the firm lists an in-house chapel, its own specialised vehicles, coffins and caskets, floral tributes and repatriation among its services. Staff speak Italian, Maltese, Arabic, Filipino and Russian. The firm has dedicated pages on Catholic and Orthodox funerals, and its cultural services page lists experience with Anglican, Middle Eastern Catholic and Orthodox, Armenian, Pacific Islander, Filipino, Vietnamese, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish funerals. Prepaid funerals are also available.

The phone line, (02) 9564 0223, is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Paul Lahood works across the Sydney metropolitan area and many regional parts of NSW, and names Ashfield, Balmain, Blacktown, Campsie, Five Dock, Marrickville, Newtown and Parramatta among its main areas. When we checked on 28 October 2026, its website linked to an itemised price list uploaded in 2021, so it is worth confirming current costs by phone.

Walter Carter Funerals

Walter Carter Funerals has been part of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs since 1887, when Walter Carter founded the business in Bondi Junction. It now works from modern premises at 249 Bronte Road, Waverley, which include a chapel for both small and larger gatherings. In 2023 the firm became part of the Propel Funeral Partners network, and its site says the team still meets regularly with descendants of Walter Carter.

The firm says it has arranged more than 60,000 farewells, from small family services to state and public funerals. It arranges burials and cremations, mausoleum and vault interments, personalised funerals, pre-planning and livestreamed services, and holds services in homes, gardens and surf clubs as well as its own chapel. The team works with Anglican, Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist and blended ceremonies, and arrangements can be made at the premises, at home, by phone or by email.

Cemeteries and crematoria

Sydney cemeteries and crematoria

Most of Sydney's large cemeteries are on Crown land. Since 1 July 2023 one operator, Metropolitan Memorial Parks, has run Rookwood General, Macquarie Park, Eastern Suburbs, Woronora, Frenchs Forest and Field of Mars, and Rookwood Crematorium returned to its care in 2025 (MMP). Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria runs Rookwood Catholic, Liverpool, Kemps Creek and Macarthur Memorial Park, and InvoCare owns Castlebrook, Forest Lawn, Pinegrove and Northern Suburbs (InvoCare price disclosure).

Burial space is getting tight. A 2023 NSW Government audit found Sydney's Crown cemeteries were running short of graves, especially for faith groups that require burial, and Macarthur Memorial Park was the first new Crown cemetery built in Sydney in over 80 years (Crown Lands; NSW Government). Since 2018 NSW cemeteries can offer renewable interment rights of 25 to 99 years as well as perpetual rights, so ask which kind you are buying (Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW).

The rules

NSW rules when someone dies

A few NSW rules shape what happens in the days after a death in Sydney:

  • Registering the death Your funeral director usually registers the death with NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages within 7 days of the burial or cremation, and can order the death certificate for you. A standard certificate costs $70 and a priority one $105 (NSW Government).
  • Permission to cremate A crematorium needs an application from the executor, nearest surviving relative or another proper person, a permit from an independent medical referee or the coroner, a cremation risk advice about implants, and the death certificate (or a coroner's order). A cremation can't go ahead if the person left a written objection to it (NSW Health; medical referee guidelines).
  • Coroner cases If a death is reported to the coroner in Sydney, the person is taken into the care of the forensic medicine service at Lidcombe. Once examinations are finished they are released to the funeral director chosen by the senior next of kin. You can start planning, but don't set a date for the service until release is confirmed (Coroners Court of NSW).
  • Your right to see prices NSW funeral directors must show itemised prices and their least expensive package on their website and at their premises, give you price information within 48 hours if you ask by phone, and give you an itemised price before you sign (NSW Fair Trading).

Faith and culture

Cultural and religious funerals in Sydney

Faith sections at Crown cemeteries

Rookwood General has a Jewish section with its own chapel, Beit Tephilla, and Woronora and Frenchs Forest also have Jewish sections. Field of Mars has a Greek lawn with candili boxes, Woronora a Greek monumental lawn, and Frenchs Forest Armenian and Orthodox sections (Metropolitan Memorial Parks).

Muslim, Coptic and Mandaean burials

Kemps Creek Memorial Park, run by Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria and open to all faiths, has Muslim, Coptic Orthodox and Mandaean lawns (product guide). A May 2023 audit forecast that Muslim, Armenian and Antiochian Orthodox graves at five Crown cemeteries would run out within about three years, so ask early about availability (Crown Lands).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families

NSW cemetery operators must meet individual cultural and spiritual needs wherever possible (Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW). If an Aboriginal person dies without the means to pay, NSW Health policy requires the local health district to pay for transport back to Country (NSW Health policy).

Help with funeral costs in NSW

If someone dies without the means to pay for a funeral and family can't pay, NSW Health can arrange a basic burial or cremation. For a death in hospital the local health district arranges it; for other deaths, including coroner cases, NSW Health Pathology assesses the request and the local health district arranges and pays (NSW Health policy). The Coroners Court suggests contacting the NSW Department of Forensic Medicine on 02 9563 9000 (Coroners Court of NSW).

Frequently Asked
Questions

Common questions about funerals in Sydney.

How much does a funeral cost in Sydney?

Among the Sydney funeral directors on this page that publish one, a cremation with no service ranges from $2,295 to $5,899 (checked October 2026). A burial costs much more: the cheapest burial on Sydney's Crown cemetery price lists ranges from about $7,200 at Field of Mars to $23,800 at Macquarie Park, before any funeral director charges.

How much is a cremation at a Sydney crematorium?

A weekday cremation with no service costs $650 plus a $47.30 government levy at the Metropolitan Memorial Parks crematoria (Rookwood, Macquarie Park, Eastern Suburbs and Woronora), and $695 plus the levy at the Catholic crematoria. Saturday cremations cost more. Your funeral director's fees, the coffin and paperwork are on top.

Is Sydney running out of burial space?

A May 2023 NSW Government audit found Sydney's Crown cemeteries were running short of graves, and forecast that Muslim, Armenian and Antiochian Orthodox graves at five Crown cemeteries would run out within about three years. Macarthur Memorial Park at Varroville opened in April 2025 to add space. Ask the cemetery what is available before you plan a burial.

Who runs Sydney's cemeteries and crematoria?

Metropolitan Memorial Parks, a Crown land manager, runs Rookwood General, Macquarie Park, Eastern Suburbs, Woronora, Frenchs Forest and Field of Mars. Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria runs Rookwood Catholic, Liverpool, Kemps Creek and Macarthur Memorial Park. InvoCare owns Castlebrook, Forest Lawn, Pinegrove and Northern Suburbs.

How do I register a death in NSW?

Your funeral director usually registers the death with NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages within 7 days of the burial or cremation, and can order the death certificate at the same time. A standard certificate costs $70 and a priority certificate $105.

What happens if the coroner is involved?

In Sydney the person is taken into the care of the forensic medicine service at Lidcombe. When examinations are finished, they are released to the funeral director chosen by the senior next of kin, and the funeral director deals with the court about release. You can start planning, but don't set a service date until release is confirmed.

Do funeral directors in NSW need a licence?

No. The NSW Government says funeral directors don't need a licence or specific qualifications. They must follow the Funeral Goods and Services Information Standard, which requires them to show itemised prices and their cheapest package, and to tell you which mortuary and crematorium they use.
