Heaven Funerals

  • Springwood, serving Brisbane & SE QLD
  • 4.9/5 - 214 Reviews

Heaven Funerals is a family-owned and operated funeral home in Springwood, on Brisbane's southern side close to the M1 and the Logan Motorway. Ross and Lee Pokere, who moved to Brisbane from New Zealand, started the business in late 2013, and the website notes the team were the first fully New Zealand qualified funeral directors and embalmers to operate out of Brisbane. Because its directors are also qualified embalmers, the firm cares for each person from start to finish at its own premises, which include a chapel, private meeting rooms, a dressing room, a kitchen and an on-site mortuary.

Cultural care is a large part of its work. The site has dedicated pages on Māori tangihanga and on Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Cook Island, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea funeral customs, along with Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and African funerals. Services cover burial, cremation, repatriation, exhumation and pre-planned funerals, and meetings can take place at the office or in the family's home.

Heaven Funerals serves Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Redlands, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, and takes calls 24/7 on (07) 3152 8363. When we checked on 27 October 2026, its pricing page listed a No Service Cremation from $4,040 and a Full Service Cremation from $8,710, with after-hours, oversize and similar surcharges charged separately.

Newhaven Funerals

Newhaven Funerals describes itself as a family-owned, locally operated funeral provider for South East Queensland. Its main funeral home is at 21 Quinns Hill Road West, Stapylton, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and it has a second office at Burleigh Heads. The Stapylton grounds hold two chapels, the Yellowwood Chapel seating up to 105 people and the Mount Stapylton Chapel seating up to 60, along with a function centre for wakes, arranging rooms, a mortuary care centre and memorial gardens. Newhaven also looks after Eco Memorial Park, which it describes as its company-owned crematorium.

The firm makes a point of keeping transport and facilities in-house and assigning one funeral director to each family. It arranges traditional and non-traditional funerals, cremations, burials, memorial services, natural burials at Alberton Cemetery, embalming, exhumations and pre-paid funeral plans, and can organise an ocean ceremony for scattering ashes. Its cultural services page covers First Nations, Māori, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Bahá'í funerals, and services can be livestreamed.

Newhaven serves Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and Northern NSW, and its phone line, (07) 3807 4444, is staffed 24 hours a day. When we checked on 27 October 2026, it listed a Non-attended Cremation from $2,999 (excluding the government levy), a Memorial Service from $5,865 and a Chapel Service from $7,353.10, with burial costs set out in its downloadable price guide.

Academy presents its options as starting points that families can mix, alter or trim, and the final cost is explained in the arrangement meeting before anything is signed. Services include cremation and burial funerals in a chapel, church or other venue of the family's choosing, unattended (direct) cremation, memorial services, private viewings, children's funerals, livestreaming for relatives who cannot attend, and pre-arranged or pre-paid funerals. K.M.Smith Funeral Directors

K.M.Smith Funeral Directors dates from 1883, when John Smith bought an undertaking business in George Street, Brisbane. After John died in 1886, his wife Kate Mary Smith took over and became Queensland's first lady funeral director, and in 2010 she was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame. The company is still 100% Australian family-owned: directors Allen Smith and Denise Smith are great-grandchildren of the founders, and Allen's son Liam is chairman.

The head office at 53 Brookes Street, Bowen Hills, houses the Kate Mary Chapel, a refreshment lounge and on-site parking. Further offices are at Arana Hills, Aspley, Capalaba, Goodna, Hillcrest, Kenmore, Mt Gravatt, North Lakes, Sherwood, Victoria Point and Wynnum. K.M.Smith owns its private mortuary at Banyo, which no other funeral director uses, as well as its transfer vehicles and hearses.

Services include burial, cremation, memorial services, livestreaming, prearranged funerals, domestic and international repatriation, and multicultural funerals, with a private room for ceremonial dressing and evening Rosary or prayer gatherings held in the chapel. Staff can be reached 24 hours a day on (07) 3252 2031. Silver Dove Funerals

Silver Dove Funerals is a 100% family-owned funeral home run by husband and wife Ada and Michael Filer, its owners. Ada, the managing director, has cared for families across South East Queensland for more than 18 years, and Michael has been business director for over a decade. The office is at 3/76 Sumners Road, Sumner, in Brisbane's western suburbs, where families can look through coffins, caskets and cremation urns in person.

Care of the deceased is handled in-house, and families deal with the same team from the first call to the farewell instead of being passed from person to person. Silver Dove arranges religious and non-religious services in churches, chapels, temples, parks, beaches, clubs or family homes, as well as veterans' funerals, funerals for children and babies, and interstate or overseas repatriations. It offers a Quality of Care Guarantee and says it will try to match or beat a lower written quote for the same service.

The family also owns the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance crematorium and chapel at Deception Bay.

The head office is at 463 Newman Road, Geebung, with branches at Thornlands, Browns Plains and Deception Bay, giving coverage from Bribie Island and Caboolture down to Jimboomba and Beaudesert and east to Redland Bay. It is a member of Funerals Australia and Selected Independent Funeral Homes. Services cover burial and cremation, pre-arranged funerals, live web streaming, catering and grief support, and arrangements can be made at home.

Anton Brown Funerals Pty Ltd was formed in 1995 by Anton and Sally Brown and remains 100% Queensland family-owned. Anton has worked in the funeral profession since 1982, and staff wear the Brown family tartan tie as a sign of the family business. The firm has offices at 57 Balaclava Street, Woolloongabba, on Brisbane's south side, and 1285 Gympie Road, Aspley, on the north side.

The rules

Queensland rules when someone dies

A few Queensland rules shape what happens in the days after a death in Brisbane:

  • Registering the death It must be registered with Queensland's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages within 14 days, and the funeral director usually does this for you. Registration is free; a death certificate costs $58.10 and standard processing takes up to 10 business days (Queensland Government).
  • Permission to cremate A cremation needs written permission from an independent doctor, or from the coroner if there was an autopsy. If the person didn't leave signed instructions, a spouse, adult child, parent or the executor (personal representative) can object to a cremation (Cremations Act 2003).
  • Coroner cases If a death is reported to the coroner, a government contracted undertaker takes the person into care, and Brisbane's forensic mortuary is at Coopers Plains (Queensland Health). The person is released to your funeral director once identification and the medical examination are complete (Coroners Court).
  • Your right to an itemised quote Since 1 July 2022, Queensland funeral directors must publish an itemised price list and their cheapest package, and give you an itemised quote within 48 hours of asking, or before you sign, whichever comes first (Queensland Government).

Faith and culture

Cultural and religious funerals in Brisbane

Cultural cemetery sections

Mt Gravatt Cemetery has long-standing religious and cultural sections, including a Muslim section with graves from 1926, a Russian Orthodox section, a Jewish and Greek Orthodox section with a Jewish chapel, and a Chinese section announced in 1985 (Brisbane heritage register). Ask Brisbane City Council on 07 3403 8888 whether new graves are available in the section you need.

Faith-based options

Nudgee Cemetery, run by the Catholic Archdiocese, offers above-ground vaults, and Centenary Memorial Gardens at Sumner has an Asian garden. All three council chapels can be used for services of any faith.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, Queensland's cremation application allows a person who is appropriate under tradition or custom to apply (application form), and the Coroners Court's funeral assistance scheme accepts requests for a return to Country within Queensland.

Help with funeral costs in Queensland

If there's no money for a funeral and no relative able to pay, the Coroners Court of Queensland's Funeral Assistance Scheme can arrange a basic funeral. Apply at the Magistrates Court nearest to where the person died, but not the Brisbane Magistrates Court in George Street, which doesn't take applications, and don't book a funeral director first: an application is declined once a funeral contract has been signed. A decision can take up to 60 business days.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Common questions about funerals in Brisbane.

How much does a funeral cost in Brisbane?

Among the Brisbane funeral directors on this page, a cremation with no service ranges from $1,980 to $7,502 on their published price lists (checked October 2026; Alex Gow's guide is stated as current to 30 June 2026). A burial costs more: a new council lawn grave and burial fee together cost $5,530 before funeral director charges, and one firm's chapel service with a new lawn grave is $14,364.

How much is a cremation at a Brisbane council crematorium?

Brisbane City Council charges $755 for an adult cremation at Pinnaroo, Mt Gravatt or Hemmant, and $498 an hour to hire a council chapel. Ashes are usually ready within 2 to 3 days. Your funeral director's fees, the coffin and paperwork are on top of the council fee.

Which Brisbane cemeteries have new graves available?

Of Brisbane City Council's 12 cemeteries, most new graves are at Pinnaroo in Bridgeman Downs, Mt Gravatt in Nathan and Hemmant, though council still prices new graves at Bald Hills ($4,479) and Brookfield ($5,564). The other cemeteries are historic with limited space, but a family grave can be reused if it has room or the last burial was more than 30 years ago. Private options include Albany Creek, Centenary Memorial Gardens and Nudgee.

Who owns Brisbane's crematoria?

Brisbane City Council runs the crematoria at Pinnaroo, Mt Gravatt and Hemmant. InvoCare owns Mt Thompson and Albany Creek Memorial Park, the Catholic Archdiocese runs Nudgee, and Centenary Memorial Gardens is privately owned. Queensland funeral directors must tell you who owns the crematorium they use.

How do I register a death in Brisbane?

Your funeral director usually registers the death with Queensland's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, which must happen within 14 days. Registration is free, a death certificate costs $58.10, and standard processing takes up to 10 business days. Urgent processing within 2 business days costs extra.

What happens if the coroner is involved?

If a death is reported to the coroner, a government contracted undertaker takes the person to an authorised facility, usually the forensic mortuary at Coopers Plains. The person is released to your chosen funeral director once identification and the medical examination are finished. You can't hold the funeral until the person is released, but you can choose a funeral director and start planning while you wait.
